Back in Iowa

Author: Bake

Back to work. We arrived back home late Saturday evening and spent Sunday recovering and doing some laundry. I went out for a quick training ride around the Center Trails during Kiersten’s nap to try and get my legs ready for my next race. Of course as it now the race is listed as cancelled, not sure what’s up with that.

Colorado was a good time. Kiersten did all right on the ride out thanks to our newly purchased DVD player for the van. It was Elmo, Shrek and The Incredibles the whole way. She came down with an ear infection on Monday night that Stacie had to make a run to the local Dr. while Sara and I were rafting on the Arkansas River.

Rafting was pretty fun. I think Sara and I were hoping for a little more intense rapids, but alas we were still thrown overboard at one point. That was quite an experience swimming in that water. Sara and I were lucky and didn’t float too long before getting back in the boat. A couple other people had to ride the rough water for a bit until they got picked up by another raft.

My one day of biking took me to the Peaks Trail between Breckenridge and Frisco. The ride to Frisco went very well. On my descent into Frisco I knew the ride back would be a tough one. Riding around Frisco I found a shop that sold GU packets and prepared for a ride back to Breckenridge. I could have taken the paved trail back but I decided I didn’t come out here to ride pavement. I put the hammer down and made it back just fine. My only regret was that the battery in my camera was near dead so I was only able to snag a few pics.

On my birthday (some say I’m 30 but I’m going with 29 and holding) we headed up to Estes Park. We had lunch at a restaurant called Poppy’s, they had the best raspberry lemonade I’ve had. My Greek burger was okay but nothing to write home about. After that we headed into the park and drove up the Old Fall River road. If you’ve never done this you’re missing out. It is 9 miles of unpaved, one way, very narrow road that wanders up to the Alpine Lodge at 11,000 feet. During this drive you’re treated to some gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains.

That was about it for our family vacation for 2005. Thanks again to Paul and Sandi for their hospitality and to my parents for trading my vans for the trip. My old van struggled up the I-70 drive into the mountains and theirs performed much better. I’ll see what I can do about getting some pictures posted tonight. It’s 10:20 and I’m yawning pretty good already.
